A non-linear path turned out to be the most direct route to designing things that actually matter.
Hi, I'm Rose.
I grew up in Miami, Florida, the daughter of Haitian immigrants who brought their whole world with them in a suitcase and rebuilt it from scratch. First-generation means watching your parents figure out a country in real time: the paperwork, the appointments, the conversations where something important gets lost between languages.
I studied Biology and Chemistry because I was drawn to how systems work: how small things interact to produce large outcomes. After graduating, I spent time traveling, painting, sewing, illustrating. Creating things with my hands taught me something a lab never could: that how something feels to use matters just as much as whether it functions.
UX design was the missing word for what I'd always been trying to do. It gave me a framework to take the analytical rigor of science and apply it to the thing I cared about most: the moment when a person interacts with a product and either feels seen, or doesn't.
That feeling became personal. I watched my parents leave doctor's appointments carrying discharge papers they couldn't fully read, nodding along to diagnoses explained in vocabulary designed for practitioners, not patients. That experience, and knowing it isn't unique to my family, is the reason I designed LAVI and the reason I keep coming back to Health Tech as my niche. The gap between what healthcare systems communicate and what patients actually understand is a design problem. And it's one I intend to help fix.
Design principles I don't compromise on.
Research before everything.
A solution invented before the problem is understood is just decoration. I don't open Figma until I understand who I'm designing for, what they're trying to accomplish, and where current experiences are failing them.
Accessibility is the baseline, not a feature.
Designing accessibly means designing well for everyone. Inclusive design isn't a checklist added at the end of a project. It's a constraint I design within from the first sketch, because the people most often excluded are often the ones who need the product most.
Clarity over cleverness.
My Biology training made me appreciate elegant simplicity. The most powerful explanations are the ones that strip away everything unnecessary. I apply that same lens to UX: if a user has to think about the interface, the interface hasn't done its job.
Identity is part of the process.
Being Haitian-American, raised in a multilingual household by an immigrant family navigating American systems, gives me perspective that isn't available from a textbook. I bring that lived context to every research session, persona, and user flow I design.

What keeps me creative.
Good design lives downstream of a full life. I paint, sew, and illustrate. Making things with my hands keeps me honest about what craft actually feels like. I travel whenever I can, because nothing recalibrates your assumptions about how people move through the world quite like being somewhere unfamiliar. And I train seriously at the gym, which is its own kind of systems thinking: consistency, progressive load, the gap between where you are and where you're going.
These aren't hobbies separate from my design practice. They're the reason I notice what I notice, care about what I care about, and keep asking better questions.
